April 10, 2010 Program

Postby admin » Sun Apr 04, 2010 8:07 am

ImageOn this broadcast we are going to be interviewing two sisters (Brandy & Danielle Young) who have struggled with eating disorders. They are going to share their story and how attending Encounter Weekends have been of help to them. Because of what God did in Brandy's life, her sister Danielle was drawn closer to Jesus.

Encounter Weekends are a Friday night and all day Saturday event that Victory Life Center Church offers every 3 months. The Encounter is a time of biblical teaching and praying for attendees to have an Encounter with God. Over the years there have been many whose life has been changed through an Encounter.

For many that are struggling with eating disorders, they are in need of ongoing counseling. We would encourage you to consider The Center, www.aplaceofhope.com. They are located in Seattle, but they offer Intensive Treatment to individuals from around the world.

Brandy and Danielle did a great job. They were very open and honest with the struggles they have had.

Brandy shared how she has struggled with anorexia, bulimia, and overeating. Brandy also shared her struggle with not being able to see how she really looks. For years she thought she was overweight when she wasn't. I forget the term she used for this distorted thinking. Brandy shared about self harming herself because of her hatred of herself. Brandy shared that understanding God's love of her, has helped her to work on overcoming ED.

Danielle shared her struggle with drugs and self-mutilation to deal with her eating disorder. She shared how learning to forgive has been one of the greatest means of helping her to overcome ED and drugs.

Both of them shared their experiences of going to an Encounter Weekend that helped them to battle eating disorders.

While the show was being broadcast. Captain Phil Harris chat room users were discussing what Brandy and Danielle was sharing. After the show I was able to chat with a couple of them and the chat room users said they could hear 'life and peace' in their voices. All of them knew somebody who had an ED and they said until the consequences of the behavior started showing up they had no idea the person had an ED. That is the real danger of an ED. As hard as it may be, if you are suspicious at all that a friend or relative may have an ED talk with them. Ask them some questions in love. The earlier that an ED is identified, there is more of a chance of recovery. Even if the person denys they have an ED, at least they are aware that others are aware,

Unlike alcohol and drugs, which a person can just not use, everyone is around food and has to eat. It takes much more self control for a person with an ED to overcome the addiction than drugs or alcohol. A person can kick heroin. You can't kick eating. However, the good news is that you can change mindsets through Christ so that you can overcome an eating disorder.
