Carmi was very open about her fears of driving, fear of speaking because of her accent, fear of doing new things, and fear of getting a disease from animals. We talked about the wrong mindsets behind these fears and also the root cause of these fears-how she was raised as a child.
For many people they have developed mindsets that may have come from how they were raised. Those mindsets may have made sense as a child, but they are no longer applicable as an adult, yet they continue to hold on to the mindsets. This is what is called stinkin thinkin. Because Carmi was overly protected by her parents, she has been one who will not 'risk'. In her mind anything can be risky, dangerous, potential of hurt either emotional or physical. To an extent this is true. Where the stinkin thinkin comes in is when her whole life is controlled by irrational thinking.
Carmi shared how she has been able to overcome the stinkin thinkin when it comes to doing things she has not done before. She has found great joy in risking when it comes to us doing things together. On one vacation she went horseback riding, whitewater rafting, ride a dune buggy, walk a mile into a cave, and even do some driving. She made the choice to change the way she thinks. My greatest joy is seeing her be like a little kid because she is so excited and seeing a smile on her face after she faced her fears.
How about facing your fears in regards to recovery? What lies are you believing that is stopping you from going to detox, getting treatment, getting counseling, leaving your unhealthy friends, or whatever it will take for you to overcome your addiction.
